Teamwork makes the dream work for Michael Gormley

Michael Gormley came to PEO EIS in November 2022 to fill a developmental role as deputy product lead for Enterprise Business Systems – Convergence (EBS-C). He went on to become deputy project manager when EBS-C was elevated to an O-6 level organization, and in February 2024 he stepped up to serve as acting project manager (PM). This summer, Gormley returned to his permanent role as deputy. He recently answered several questions about his background and interests. 

Where were you born and raised?  

I was born in Richmond, Virginia and raised in Petersburg along with my older brother. I lived in central Virginia until I went to college at Virginia Tech. After college, I got a job as a contractor in Fairfax as a federal financial subject matter expert. 

What is the coolest thing about working with EBS-C?  

It’s really the people — the caliber of people we’re working with. We’re taking Army ERP [enterprise resource planning] to the next level by bringing together over 40 years of collective activity under one roof to drive efficiencies and put users at the center of what we do. Historically, users struggled with ERPs; one of the things we’ve been charged with is providing users with a system that’s both intuitive and easy to use. That’s exciting. The way in which we’re developing the system should enable self-guided activities for using it with minimal training. 

What was your top takeaway from filling in as project manager over the past several months? 

In order to do great things, the team must be empowered to do so. This has been instrumental in the success of EBS-C thus far. We have great teammates, and it's important to allow them space to be creative to do those great things. 

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?  

I enjoy working with my hands — anything dealing with power tools or heavy machinery. My wife and I built our first house. I was the general contractor and did much of the work myself. We’ve also renovated a couple of houses. Most recently, over the July 4 weekend, I built a pond at my house using excavators and bulldozers. Now we’re just waiting for rain to fill it up! I also have off-roading as a hobby. My youngest daughter and I spend quality time hitting the trails of West Virginia. 

Any favorite books, podcasts, TV shows, movies you’d recommend to others?  

Anything by Simon Sinek. He’s an author and inspirational speaker on business leadership and employee engagement. His writings are eye-opening and empowering.  

What is your favorite part about working for PEO EIS? 

For me, it’s the culture. It’s next level and professional across the board. Processes are streamlined compared to other organizations and are flexible enough to change with PEO EIS’ evolving needs. I really love that.
