PEO EIS spotlights data-driven technologies at virtual AUSA conference
The “Warriors Corner”— traditionally an on-site, exhibit-based venue for presentations on important discussion topics at the Association for the U.S. Army’s (AUSA) annual conference — may have been virtual this year, but that didn’t stop PEO EIS representatives from discussing and demoing innovative technologies, and responding to numerous questions from online attendees.
On Tuesday, Oct. 13, Col. Gregory Johnson, division chief of the Integrated Personnel and Pay System – Army (IPPS-A) functional management division, provided an update on IPPS-A Release 3, the online talent management system that will be rolled out to the Army’s active component and Reserve by December 2021. Reminding viewers that “we’re already live in IPPS-A,” with the National Guard fully fielded as of March 2020, Johnson said the new iteration has advanced from the build to the initial testing phase.
Release 3 has three key focus areas, according to Johnson. First is the streamlining of human resources (HR) business processes as the system shifts from HR to talent management. Second is a massive data correctness campaign, which is being promoted to both Soldiers and commanders. Third is the modernizing of the IT data infrastructure at the Army Human Resources Command.
To highlight some of IPPS-A Release 3’s functionality, Johnson showed a demo of its Talent Workcenter — the “bedrock and baseline of talent management in our Release 3 offering to the Army.” Among other features, the workcenter enables units to post current and projected job opportunities, and view and compare Soldiers’ talent profiles, matching job requirements to Soldier attributes.

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, Miranda Coleman, product lead for Army Vantage — part of PEO EIS’s Army Data and Analytics Platforms (ARDAP) portfolio — co-presented information on the Commander’s Risk Reduction Toolkit (CRRT), which has been integrated with Army Vantage. CRRT, formerly known as the Commander’s Risk Reduction Dashboard, is designed to help enhance the ability of command teams to view Soldiers’ risk histories and unit risk trends, so leaders can develop strategies to improve Soldier and unit readiness.
According to Coleman, the Army Resiliency Directorate’s dashboard was integrated with Army Vantage since the latter system’s data visualization platform already contained many of the data sources that were required. In total, CRRT pulls data from 27 different feeds showing risk factors — such as traffic violations and domestic violence records — culling them into one central picture for leadership via the Army Vantage system.
Army Vantage helps Army stakeholders “see themselves and make data-driven decisions” said Coleman.
Coleman and her co-presenters, Randy Lane from the Army Resiliency Directorate and CRRT functional lead Mike Biggerstaff, shared a number of de-identified screenshots from the CRRT’s readiness tracker.
CRRT is being fielded to leaders within the Army’s active component this month and will be rolled out to the reserve components in early 2021.
